The Buzz: Josh Bender is one of the most radical freeriders ever. Born in Alaska, Josh experienced the Lower 48 for the first time at age 20 and found it disappointingly "mellow." But after some exploration, he settled in the wilds of Virgin, Utah, and proceeded to rewrite the history of his sport. With the philosophy that "you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet," Josh accepts crashes as the byproduct of progression - and when you're jumping 50-foot drops, the crashes are more spectacular than most. The rider's medical history is a string of concussions, lacerations, and broken bones, but when he nails a landing, it's a thing of beauty. So is what he's done for freeriding. Josh's audacity has been largely responsible for the improved suspension and durability of today's mountain bikes. And he was a co-conspirator in helping to organize the inaugural Red Bull Rampage in 2001. Currently, he's on the lookout for a huckable 100-footer...
Photo Ops: Josh has been featured the North Shore Odyssey calendar, as well as magazines worldwide, including Sports Illustrated, Playboy (Germany), BIKE (Germany and U.S.), Mountain Biking, Heads, Outside, Outdoor, Freeze, and Powder. Footage of his drops and other mischief is featured in releases including Down, Double Down, Superheroes, New World Disorder I and II, and Crusty Demons of Dirt 7.
Leisure Pursuits: Skiing, especially when it involves insane lines and big drop-offs.
